Reflection: Describe your most challenging moments in this class. How did you use growth mindset ideas to work through the challenges? Give 2-3 well-developed examples with specific supporting details. Reflecting on your experiences, how do you perceive writing in English now?

The biggest challenge for me in the AmLa80 class is my speaking. Most of the time I can understand my professor and classmates, but I don’t dare to speak. I’m afraid of making mistakes, afraid that my pronunciation will be inaccurate, and worried that I have an accent and my professor and classmates won’t understand me.

However, I find that the professor and classmates are very friendly. They encourage me to express my opinions in class and in group discussions. Even if my expressions were not very accurate, they would quickly get what I meant.

I began to realize that I had to speak. Only by speaking more could I have the opportunity to practice my speaking. Especially in class, communicating with my professor and classmates could improve my speaking ability quickly. Only by discovering mistakes can I correct them and improve my speaking.

Writing in English is a process of accumulation and practice. We need to read more books and articles to accumulate ideas, and then practice more.

9. Paper 3 - Include the first draft and the final draft with a reflection on your writing process. Share a meaningful lesson from this process.

 Paper 3 first draft

Paper 3 final draft

I have to say that paper 3 was a little bit difficult for me. I misunderstood the topic of the paper 3 at the beginning. The question I chose to answer was "What do you think are the greatest concerns in regard to immigration?" I thought I needed to write about the concerns of immigrants, but I should write about is what concerns Americans have when it comes to the topic of immigration. Thus, I encountered difficulties in per-writing at the beginning. After communicating with Ms Lee in class, I finally understood what I needed to write.

In Paper 3, the most meaningful thing I learned was how to search for resources on the library website to prove my own point of view. When I wrote about cultural issues, I found that the class resources mainly focused on economic issues, and did not focus on culture, so I went to the library website to find a video about cultural issues, and cited it in my paper. This technique helped me a lot in my writing and made my paper more convincing.

8. Paper 2 - Include the first draft and the final draft with a reflection on your writing process. Share a meaningful lesson from this process.

 Paper 2 first draft

Paper 2 final draft

In Paper 2 We wrote about myths about immigration. In the writing process, we analyzed the impact of immigration myths and how to better deal with these misunderstandings.
We learned how to write introduction and conclusion paragraphs to make our paper structure looks more complete. Compared with Paper 1, my Paper 2 has made some progress. When writing the topic sentence, supporting sentence and conclusion sentence, I will pay attention to whether they match each other. We also learned how to write a strong and arguable thesis statement. It is a completed sentence at the end of the introduction paragraph.

7. Paper 1 - Include the first draft and the final draft with a reflection on your writing process. Share a meaningful lesson from this process.

Paper 1 final draft

On my paper 1 writing process, I think my language was informal and not academic. There are many punctuation errors in this paper, and the structure is not perfect either. Lack of transition words and coordinating conjunctions in sentences.

This is my first time writing an English paper in MLA format, which i didn't know before, and I used in-text citation to share my personal understanding of the American Dream. I use quotes from books and articles to prove my viewpoint. I learned and thought about the American Dream.

Paper 1

I revised my paper 1, and sent it to Loisa; I got her feedback.

Paper 2

Paper 3

When I was writing Paper 3, I couldn't find a suitable citation. Then, I learned how to search the resource on the library website in class, I found a suitable citation on the website that I could use in Paper 3.

5. Office Hours/Student Hours

A. Evidence of meeting with your professor (Esther Lee) or DS (Loisa Chen) during office hours or tutoring hours.

B. Write a brief summary of the meeting. What was your takeaway from the experience?

After my each draft of the paper is completed, I will schedule an asynchronous feedback appointment with Loisa.
In paper 1, through Loisa's feedback, I found that I had many problems in my writing, such as punctuation and fanboys. In addition, I learned how to correctly quote an in-text citation in the paper and how to match the topic sentences and the conclusion sentences.
In paper 2, I learned about comma splices and runs-on, which gave me a better understanding of how to use punctuation. In the paper 2, my writing improved a little bit, and I learned the technique of matching the topic sentence with the conclusion sentence. I also learned how to write a thesis statement.
In paper 3, I learned how to use library resources to find references that fit the content of my paper. When I was writing the second body paragraph, I found that I couldn’t find a suitable citation in the class resources, so I went to the library website to look for other resources.
I really appreciate Loisa. Thanks her for helping me
